Affirming LGBTQ: Living with HIV

Affirming LGBTQ: Living With HIV is NYCAP’s newest and dynamic process group with a deep focus to serve persons living with HIV. Within this space, our mission is to provide a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive environment for individuals to express themselves honestly in a community setting, while also creating their own narrative of what it means to be HIV+ positive. We profoundly recognize the ever-present difficulties and impact of stigmatization which exists and the very personal feelings (e.g., fear, shame, anger, and confusion) that this following diagnosis may bring. With this in mind, we will explore things like navigating disclosure and healthcare, relationships, dating, sex, stigma, overcoming shame, identity-related concerns, stress-management, Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) adherence, self-care, and more! This transformative experience will run over an 8-week series.

Survivors’ Circle

The Survivors' Circle group series centers Black queer and trans survivors (18+) of sexual violence. Survivors’ Circle will offer 8 weekly sessions that provide an opportunity for folks to come together and process how their identities as survivors intersect and impact various parts of their lives such as relationships, body autonomy, and more.

Black Men Support Space

BIPOC Support Space:

Through guided discussions, participants will be encouraged to center their lived experiences and to foster community. With the onset of COVID-19, and the continued hyper-visibility of anti-Black racism, this group will include dialogue on coping strategies, self-care, and what it means to move towards intersectional liberation.

Trauma Exploration and Imagination Reclamation Group

A group for Cis and Trans Women of Color ages 25-40

This 8-week group will focus on the basics of trauma and its impact on people’s spirits, minds and bodies in the moment and over time. It will also help to break down the stigma surrounding traumatic experiences and responses. In addition to discussing healthy coping strategies and self-care, the group will explore their individual pathways to imaginative power and provide safe space for creative healing possibilities.

Creating A New Normal

This 8 week process group is for individuals who are looking to discover and get help with how to live a more robust lifestyle.  In this nonjudgmental space individuals will explore their substance use with others. They also will be empowered to create a “new normal” that enhances their well-being, by incorporating new and healthier life choices.  Through various exercises and discussions, group members will uncover the root of what is keeping them stuck in destructive behaviors, in order to replace those behaviors with more beneficial coping responses to stressors.  The group will attempt to breakdown the beliefs that the individuals have of themselves and their trauma to discover, with support, how to overcome obstacles and live a more content existence.

Real Race Talk

In this process group for Black Cis and Trans Women 18+, members will begin to examine issues of race, gender, and systemic racism. We will discuss how racism impacts their personal lives, the workplace, and their communities. We will unpack the effects of microaggressions, implicit bias, and racial trauma in our everyday lives. We will offer ideas on how members can improve their ability to engage in meaningful, brave, and authentic conversations about race. We will encourage an atmosphere that is welcoming, and affirming.

The purpose of this group is to foster growth, healing and self- acceptance. This group is informed by The Racial Literacy Group, and the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond and their Undoing Racism©️ Workshop.

Black Men Support Space

All participants will need access to paper and their choice of medium such as: markers, colored pencils, chalk, oil pastels, and/or paints.
